New PM Theresa May
Hindu Matters in Britain congratulates Theresa May in becoming the new British Prime Minister.
In a fast paced and tumultuous few days in Westminster, Prime Minister May has appointed a majority state educated cabinet. However, her mission to a gender balance did not come to fruition as only a third of top posts went to women.
Nevertheless, she has tried to turn around some of the negative perceptions of the Cameron era of public school boys and clubs in the reshuffle. Prime Minister May promoted a raft of MPs who are not from privileged backgrounds including Justine Greening, Andrea Leadsom, Greg Clark, Priti Patel, David Davis and Karen Bradley, spelling an end to the era of the so-called Notting Hill set that has dominated Downing Street. The Guardian has done an excellent piece on looking at the various statistics on the new cabinet.
In terms of ethnicity, there are now two ministers: Sajiv Javid who has been moved from Business to Department for Communities and Local Government and fellow Indian Priti Patel who was Employment Minister promoted to Secretary for International Development.
