Marking 68th Republic Day
India celebrated its 68th Republic Day on 26th January 2017 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosting Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi
The crown prince was treated to a showcase of India’s military might during a parade along Raj Path, the city’s ceremonial boulevard, while other celebrations took place across the country reported the Wall Street Journal. Previous foreign guests have included former US President Barrack Obama.
Google also marked the occasion with doodle shows a stadium full of people lined up according to the colours of the Indian flag. Reported in the Indian Express, Republic Day is celebrated as the day when India acquired a written Constitution and became an independent republic. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 and came into effect on January 26, 1950. 26 January was chosen to be observed as the Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 when the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj or Indian independence from the British regime. Also, India has the longest written Constitution in the world, with 448 articles in 22 Parts, 12 Schedules and 97 Amendments.
NDTV reported on Indian-American who celebrated the event in US Missions. Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna paid floral tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the embassy and unfurled the national flag in the presence of large number of Indian-Americans to celebrate the 68th Republic Day in Washington DC. In his brief address to the gathering, Mr Sarna highlighted India's development and India-US relationship.
The Indian Express also reported on a French Astronaut who has been sending stunning pictures from space on India.
As India become more and influential on the world stage, its social, political and cultural impact is further highlighted in all continents of the world and as beyond the earthly boundary.
